You Do Not Get God in Pieces

By Prophet of Grace PAULYB

A lot of Christians treat the Holy Spirit like a spiritual gas tank that always needs to be refilled. We think we get a little bit of Him, then we use Him up, then we have to go back to church, back to the altar, back to the meeting, back to the conference, and get filled again. Then we go pour out, get empty, come back, get filled, pour out, get empty, and keep doing that over and over again. But the Holy Spirit is not gas in a tank. He is not spiritual electricity. He is not some power source you plug into once a week. He is not a thing. He is a Person. He is God. And He lives in you.

That may sound simple, but it changes everything. Because if the Holy Spirit is just a power you receive, then of course you will always be trying to get more power. You will always feel like you need another touch, another filling, another level, another breakthrough, another meeting, another impartation, another moment where you finally feel full again. But if the Holy Spirit is God Himself living in you, then the Christian life is not about trying to collect more pieces of God. It is about waking up to the fullness of God already given to you in Christ.

That is why this matters so much. Many believers are exhausted because they are trying to get more of Someone they already have. They are not bad people. They love God. They are hungry. They want to know Him. But religion has taught them to chase what Jesus already gave them.

Colossians says that in Christ “all the fullness of the Godhead” dwells bodily. That means Jesus does not have a small piece of God. Jesus does not carry part of God. Jesus is not God’s assistant. Jesus is not a lesser picture of the Father. Jesus carries the fullness of God in human form. All of God is seen in Christ. That is why when Philip said to Jesus, “Show us the Father,” Jesus basically said, “Philip, have I been with you this long and you still do not know Me? If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father.” That one statement should heal so much confusion in the church.

Because many people still think Jesus is one way, but the Father is another way. They think Jesus is kind, but the Father is harsh. Jesus forgives, but the Father is angry. Jesus heals, but the Father sends sickness. Jesus loves sinners, but the Father is waiting to punish them. But Jesus never revealed a different God. Jesus revealed the Father perfectly. There is no hidden side of God that does not look like Jesus. That means when you want to know what God is like, you look at Jesus. When you want to know how God treats broken people, you look at Jesus. When you want to know how God responds to sinners, failures, doubters, sick people, ashamed people, and religious outcasts, you look at Jesus. Jesus is not the nice part of God. Jesus is the full truth of God.

Now this brings us into something very powerful about the Trinity. There is an old word called perichoresis. It sounds big, but the meaning is beautiful and simple. It means the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit live in perfect union with one another. They are distinct, but they are never separated. The Father is not over there. Jesus is not over here. The Holy Spirit is not somewhere else waiting to show up later. The Trinity moves together. You do not get Jesus one day, then pray hard enough and finally get the Holy Spirit another day, then go through enough healing and finally meet the Father later. No. The Trinity comes as one. When you receive Christ, you are not receiving a tiny corner of God. You are being brought into the life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

That is why the idea of trying to “get more God” can become so confusing. I understand what people mean. They want to experience Him more. They want to become more aware of Him. They want more fruit, more power, more love, more boldness, more joy. That desire is good. But the language matters because sometimes our language teaches us lack. We say, “God, give me more of You,” while the gospel is saying, “You have been given fullness in Christ.” Maybe the better prayer is not, “God, give me more of You,” but, “Father, open my eyes to the fullness You already gave me in Jesus.” That is not a small shift. That is a huge shift. Because one prayer comes from lack, and the other comes from faith. One prayer says, “I am empty until You come.” The other says, “You are here, and I want to become more aware of You.”

This is why the incarnation is so important. Jesus becoming human was not just a setup for the cross. The incarnation itself is gospel. God became man. The Word became flesh. God stepped into humanity, not just to visit us for a little while, but to join Himself to humanity forever. Jesus did not become human for thirty-three years and then throw His body away after the resurrection. He did not use humanity like a costume. He did not borrow a body, finish the mission, and then go back to being distant Spirit. No. Jesus still has a body. The same Jesus who walked the roads of Galilee, touched lepers, ate with sinners, broke bread, cried real tears, and carried real wounds is now risen, glorified, and seated in heavenly places. There is a real human being in the life of God forever. That should make you stop and think. There is a man in the Trinity. The man Christ Jesus. Paul says there is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus. Not the man Jesus used to be. The man Christ Jesus. That means the incarnation was not temporary. It is permanent. God has forever joined Himself to humanity in Christ.

This destroys the lie that God hates humanity. It destroys the idea that the physical world is trash and the spiritual world is the only thing God cares about. That is not Christianity. That is closer to old gnostic thinking, where matter is bad and spirit is good. But the resurrection says something very different. God does not throw creation away. God restores it. God does not hate humanity. God heals humanity. God does not reject the human body. God raises it. The big word in Christianity is resurrection. Not escape. Not floating away. Not becoming ghost-like spirits on clouds forever. Resurrection means God is redeeming the whole person and, in Christ, the whole creation.

This is why Jesus still having a body matters. The nail-scarred feet that walked in Nazareth are seated in heavenly places. The hands that touched the sick are glorified hands. The body that was broken is now raised. And because you are in Christ, your humanity has been brought into His life. You are woven into the humanity of Jesus. That means your union with God is not based on your feelings. It is not based on whether you feel spiritual today. It is not based on whether you prayed enough, cried enough, fasted enough, or felt enough goosebumps in worship. Your union with God is located in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the place where God and humanity meet. He is the bridge. He is the union. He is the meeting place. He is the God-man. This is why Scripture says all things hold together in Him. Jesus is not just part of the Christian message. Jesus is the glue of the whole universe. In Him, God and creation are held together. In Him, heaven and earth meet. In Him, humanity is brought into the life of God.

So when you breathe, you are breathing Christological air. You are breathing Trinitarian air. That simply means your life is already surrounded by the reality of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are not living in a God-empty world trying to pull God down. You are living in a world held together by Christ, and the Holy Spirit is waking you up to see it. This is where so much striving begins to fall off. Because now you realize the problem was never that God was far away. The problem was that we were blind to how close He already came. Religion says, “Do more so God will come near.” The gospel says, “God came near in Jesus, and He is waking you up to enjoy Him.” Religion says, “You need more of God because you are empty.” The gospel says, “You have fullness in Christ, now learn to live from what you have.” Religion says, “Keep chasing the presence.” The gospel says, “You are the temple of the Holy Spirit.”

And this does not make us lazy. It makes us alive. When you know God is already in you, prayer becomes communion instead of begging. Worship becomes celebration instead of trying to open a locked heaven. Ministry becomes overflow instead of burnout. And spiritual growth becomes awareness instead of striving. You can still ask God to fill you, but now you understand what that means. It is not God giving you another missing piece of Himself. It is the Holy Spirit making you more aware of the fullness of Christ already in you. It is your soul coming into agreement with what is already true in your spirit. That is the difference between lack and faith. You are not trying to earn the Holy Spirit. You are learning to walk with Him. You are not trying to pull God down. You are learning to recognize Him in you. You are not trying to get closer to a distant Father. You are waking up inside the Son, by the Spirit, to the Father who has already embraced you.

This is why Jesus is everything. To see Jesus is to see the Father. To receive Jesus is to receive the life of the Trinity. To be in Christ is to be included in the place where God and humanity are forever joined. So no, you do not get God in pieces. You do not have part of Jesus, part of the Spirit, and maybe someday the Father. The fullness of God has come to you in Christ. The Holy Spirit is not a spiritual gas tank. He is not energy. He is not power you collect. He is God living in you. And the good news is not that one day you might finally get enough of Him. The good news is that in Christ, God has given Himself fully. Now we get to spend the rest of our lives waking up to what that really means.
