You Can Get the Word Right and Still Miss the Person

You can get the prophetic word right and still miss the person standing in front of you. That ought to make us stop for a minute. We spend so much time asking, “Did I hear that right? Was that really God? What if I miss it?” And a lot of times under those questions is something we don’t want to admit. We’re afraid we’ll disappoint God.
So now we’re trying to hear from a Father we’re scared of letting down. We’re standing there ministering to somebody, and half our mind is on how we’re doing. Where does love fit into that? Paul said, “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:1). Look at what he tells us to pursue. Love.
He absolutely encourages prophecy. But he puts it in the middle of everything he just said in chapter thirteen. You can have strong revelation and still miss the very thing that gives your ministry its meaning. That gets my attention. What if getting the details right has become the biggest thing to us, and we barely stop to think about how the person feels standing there with us?
Did they feel seen? Were they treated with dignity? Did they encounter the heart of Jesus, or did they just become a chance for us to prove we hear God? Accuracy matters. If we say something happened and it didn’t, love doesn’t make it true. We need to own that.
But getting the facts right, by itself, doesn’t tell us if we carried the Father’s heart. You can know something about somebody and still have no idea how to love them with what you know. Jesus shows us what God is like. He says that whoever has seen Him has seen the Father (John 14:9). So our understanding of the prophetic has to begin with Him. His life gives us the clearest picture of what it means for God to make Himself known to a person.
Watch how He meets people. He knows their stories, but He doesn’t treat them like information. Their lives matter to Him. That’s the heart I want shaping my prophetic ministry.
And because of our union with Christ, we’re not trying to work up that heart from far off. Christ lives in us. His Spirit is already present. Through Jesus, we’ve been welcomed into the love shared by Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
That means pursuing love starts with receiving. Let Him love you in the place where you’re afraid of getting it wrong. Let His faithfulness settle the question of whether you belong. Your ability to deliver a prophetic word didn’t bring you into Christ, and a mistake doesn’t make Him leave you. There’s room to learn here. There’s room to be corrected without falling apart.
When you know you’re loved, you can stop making the person in front of you carry the weight of your need to be right. You can listen. You can ask a question. You can say, “This is what I’m sensing. Does that mean anything to you?” And if it doesn’t, you can leave room for that instead of pushing harder until they agree.
Love gives people room to weigh what we share. Paul makes room for that too in 1 Corinthians 14:29. Saying “God told me” should never become a way of taking away somebody’s voice. So how do we actually do this? Before you reach for a word, pay attention to the person.
Ask, “Father, how do You see them? What would help them recognize Your heart?” Then listen without rushing to make something happen. Maybe you sense encouragement. Maybe there’s a hard truth to share, and you share it with care. Maybe you realize you need to keep listening. Love can be patient enough to wait.
Paul says prophecy speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). So it is bigger than whether we got a name, a date, or a detail right. What are we building in this person? Are we helping them trust Jesus? Are we honoring their freedom? Can we take correction from them as quick as we expect them to take a word from us?
These questions go deep, because they touch why we do what we do. And this grows in everyday life. How we treat somebody who interrupts us. How we respond when we’re corrected. Whether we care about people who have nothing to offer our ministry. That’s where we practice participating in the love already given to us in Christ.
I want to hear clearly. I want to grow in accuracy. I also want to stay tender enough to notice the person I’m speaking to. Because I can get the details right and still mishandle their heart. Pursue love. Let the desire to prophesy grow there.
If hearing God clearly and prophesying from His heart is where you want to grow, that is why I wrote GOD’S VOICE. It will help you recognize His voice and test what you hear, so the word you carry lands the way He meant it to: Get GOD’S VOICE (book + audio) here.
