You Are Not Half Clean

By Prophet of Grace PAULYB

Most believers have been taught a version of the gospel where Jesus forgives you… but somehow leaves your old sinful nature attached to you like a spiritual parasite you can never escape. So Christians spend their lives talking about “managing sin,” “fighting the flesh,” “staying humble through failure,” and “trying harder next time.” But that is not the language of the New Covenant. That is not the language of the cross. And it is definitely not the language Paul used.

Let me ask you something. What actually happened in the circumcision of Christ? Paul says in Colossians that you were “set free from your sinful nature.” Something was removed. Something was cut away. Something ended. Not covered. Not hidden. Removed. Gone. Buried with Him in baptism. Dead with Christ. Raised into new life. Paul keeps using the same picture over and over again because he is trying to wake believers up to something massive: The old you is not struggling to become new. The old you died. Religion keeps trying to rehabilitate a man God already buried. That’s why so many believers live exhausted. They keep trying to improve a version of themselves that Heaven already crucified. The cross was not behavior modification. It was execution.

Now think about circumcision for a second. Is circumcision a daily process? Does the doctor leave part of it hanging there “to keep you humble”? Of course not. But this is exactly what many religious systems teach spiritually. They tell you Jesus forgave you, but God intentionally leaves a little corruption inside you just to make sure you stay dependent on Him. So according to that logic: God leaves pride in you to teach humility. Leaves lust in you to teach purity. Leaves greed in you to teach generosity. But sin does not produce righteousness. Darkness does not teach light. And bondage does not reveal freedom. Jesus did not come to partially free you. He came to destroy the lie of separation completely.

Now listen carefully because this is where many people miss the gospel. Grace is not Jesus plus your effort. Grace is not Jesus plus your spiritual performance. Grace is not Jesus plus fasting enough, praying enough, suffering enough, striving enough, or proving yourself enough. Grace plus law always becomes law. The moment you add your self-effort as a requirement for identity, you blind yourself to what Christ already accomplished.

Paul dealt with this constantly. The Judaizers followed him everywhere. And they never openly denied Jesus. That’s the dangerous part. Religion rarely rejects Jesus completely. It simply adds to Him. “Jesus is good… but you also need this.” “Jesus saved you… but now you must complete the process.” “Jesus forgave you… but real spirituality comes through our system.” That spirit still exists today. Nobody may be preaching physical circumcision anymore, but people preach spiritual circumcision constantly. “If you really want breakthrough, do this special formula.” “If you really want God to move, complete this program.” “If you really want to be holy, achieve this level.” And suddenly believers are back to striving again. Back to measuring themselves. Back to spiritual insecurity. Back to chasing what was already given freely in Christ.

But Paul said something shocking: “If one died for all, then all died.” That means the cross was not just Jesus dying near you. It was your death included in His. Your old Adamic identity ended there. The gospel is not God giving the old you a second chance. The gospel is God creating something entirely new. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation.” The Greek word there is not neos — meaning another version of the old thing. It is kainos. Entirely different in kind. Never existed before.

You are not a cleaned-up sinner. You are not a spiritually improved Adam. You are not the old you trying to behave better. You are a completely new creation in union with Christ. That changes everything. Holiness is no longer you trying to earn identity. Holiness becomes living in agreement with who you already are. Paul never said, “Become holy so God accepts you.” He said, “You are holy — now live like it.” That is completely different. Religion starts with behavior and hopes to reach identity. Grace starts with identity and transforms behavior naturally. Because when you finally see who you are in Christ, obedience stops feeling like punishment and starts becoming the natural expression of your real nature. A dog barks because it is a dog. A believer walks in righteousness because Christ lives in them. This is why Paul says the love of Christ “compels” us. Not fear. Not shame. Not terror. Love. The revelation of union changes you from the inside out.

And this is where many believers need healing in their thinking. You have spent years identifying yourself by weakness, failure, temptation, struggle, addiction, fear, or shame. But Heaven identifies you through Jesus. The authentic blueprint of your life is not your trauma. It is Christ. The authentic blueprint is not your worst moment. It is Jesus. The authentic blueprint is not what culture says about you. It is Jesus. You are not discovering your darkness. You are discovering the Christ-life that has always been your true design. And once your eyes open to that reality, you stop obsessing over darkness. You stop living devil-conscious. You stop acting like the Christian life is mainly about avoiding demons, surviving attacks, and trying not to fail. The gospel is not your induction into a war zone. The gospel is the announcement that Christ already won. You don’t fight for victory. You live from victory.

You are not trying to become accepted. You already are accepted in the Beloved. You are not waiting for union with God. Union happened through Christ. You are not trying to get God closer. He already made His home in you. The question is not whether God is near. The question is whether your eyes are open to what is already true. Because once you see Him clearly, you start seeing yourself clearly too. And suddenly holiness stops looking miserable. Holiness becomes joyful. Alive. Free. Radiant. Because there is only one kind of holiness in the Kingdom: Jesus-shaped holiness. And Jesus was full of joy. So hear me clearly today: You are not half clean. You are not partially redeemed. You are not spiritually unfinished. You are not an abandoned sinner trying to earn Heaven’s approval. In Christ, the old has passed away. And behold… ALL THINGS have become new.
