What Is a Seer?
6:16

By Prophet of Grace PAULYB

A lot of people think a seer is just somebody who sees visions. But that definition is too small. A seer is not just somebody seeing angels, colors, symbols, or spiritual images floating around the room. Those things can happen, yes. But prophetic sight is deeper than supernatural experiences.

A seer is somebody whose inner perception has been awakened by the Spirit of God. A seer sees beyond surface reality. They do not just look at what is happening outwardly. They begin to perceive what heaven is saying underneath the situation.

In Scripture, the Bible says: “For he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.” — 1 Samuel 9:9 NKJV. A seer was somebody who perceived divine reality, not just with natural eyes, but with spiritual understanding.

And I believe one of the biggest misunderstandings in the prophetic today is this: People think seers are called to mainly expose darkness. But Jesus never revealed darkness without revealing redemption. True prophetic sight always reveals the heart of God.

A real seer sees: God’s intention, God’s solution, God’s timing, God’s perspective, and God’s redemptive purpose.

Yes, a seer may discern spiritual roots. Yes, they may perceive warfare. Yes, they may recognize brokenness. But mature prophetic sight does not stop at the problem. It reveals heaven’s answer.

That is why Jesus is the perfect picture of prophetic sight. When everybody else saw a prostitute… Jesus saw a daughter. When everybody else saw a tax collector… Jesus saw an apostle. When everybody else saw failure in Peter… Jesus saw restoration. That is prophetic vision.

Religion often sees people according to their behavior. But heaven sees people according to redemption. That does not mean sin is ignored. It means identity is seen deeper than failure. A true seer does not partner with accusation. A true seer partners with redemption.

This is important because many people today have made the prophetic fear-based. Everything becomes: “A demon.” “A curse.” “A spirit.” “A dark attack.” But if your entire prophetic ministry is centered around darkness, then you are seeing through the wrong lens.

Jesus is the lens. The cross is the lens. Love is the filter. The finished work is the foundation. A mature seer does not become fascinated with darkness. They become anchored in light.

And when they see darkness, they interpret it through victory, not fear. I teach people all the time: The mind was never created to be a battlefield. The mind becomes a battlefield only when thoughts are left outside the obedience of Christ. Otherwise, the believer was designed to live from victory.

That means prophetic sight should flow from rest. Not panic. Not striving. Not spiritual paranoia. Many people think being a seer means becoming spooky. No. Being a seer means becoming sensitive to the heart of God.

Sometimes prophetic sight comes through visions. Sometimes dreams. Sometimes impressions. Sometimes sensing. Sometimes scripture suddenly opening up with revelation. Sometimes God highlights a person, a word, or a moment.

But the goal is not the experience itself. The goal is communion. The goal is union. The goal is seeing through the mind of Christ. I believe every believer has access to spiritual perception because the Spirit of God lives inside of them.

Not everybody functions in the same office. Not everybody carries the same grace. But every believer is invited into relationship with the Holy Spirit. Jesus said: “My sheep hear My voice.” That means hearing and perceiving God was never supposed to belong only to a spiritual elite.

The prophetic is not about becoming superior. It is about becoming surrendered. One of the greatest dangers for seers is pride. Why? Because revelation can make people feel special. But revelation without love becomes distortion.

If revelation does not make you more compassionate… more humble… more Christlike… then something has gone wrong in the interpretation. A mature seer learns how to carry revelation with gentleness. Not every revelation needs public exposure. Not every discernment needs announcement. Jesus often perceived things without embarrassing people.

Why? Because love protects while truth restores. That is prophetic maturity. And let me say this clearly: Seeing something spiritually does not automatically mean you interpreted it correctly. Many people receive genuine revelation but interpret it through fear, trauma, suspicion, religion, or separation-thinking.

That is why prophetic people must renew their minds. You do not just need revelation. You need the mind of Christ to interpret revelation correctly. This is why I teach that prophetic interpretation must always pass through the nature of Jesus. If your interpretation contradicts the goodness revealed in Christ, then your interpretation still needs healing.

Jesus is perfect theology. Jesus is perfect prophetic interpretation. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. So when we grow as seers, we are not growing into weirdness. We are growing into clearer vision of the Father. We are learning how heaven thinks.

We are learning how love sees. We are learning how redemption speaks. A seer is not just someone who sees visions. A seer is someone whose spiritual perception has been awakened to recognize what heaven is saying and reveal God’s heart into the earth. And the highest level of prophetic sight is not merely seeing mysteries. It is seeing people the way Jesus sees them.

If God is awakening your eyes and you want to grow as a seer, that is why I made SEEING IN THE SPIRIT for you. It is the audiobook, and it comes with a personal prophetic letter from me. It will train you to perceive what God is showing you and interpret it through the heart of Jesus: Get SEEING IN THE SPIRIT (audiobook) here.

If you want to go deeper in this, come into the Inner Circle. It is where we grow as seers and prophets together, learning to see people the way Jesus sees them: Go deeper in the Inner Circle.
