Raised Together With Christ

By Prophet of Grace PAULYB

A lot of people think Paul’s gospel says this: “First you believe… then God finally raises you.” But that is not what Paul was saying. Paul’s gospel is way bigger than that. Paul says humanity was included in Jesus Christ. When Jesus died, humanity died in Him. When Jesus was buried, humanity was buried in Him. When Jesus rose, humanity rose in Him. And now the Holy Spirit is waking people up to see it, believe it, and live in it. That changes everything. It changes how we see salvation. It changes how we see faith. It changes how we see baptism. And it changes how we see God.

Buried Together With Him

Paul says in Colossians 2:12, “having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.” The Greek word Paul uses is συνταφέντες — synthaphentes. That little beginning part — syn — means together with, joined with, participating with. Paul is using union language. He is not saying, “You later buried yourself.” No. He says, “You were buried together with Christ.” That means Jesus did not go into death alone. He entered death carrying humanity in Himself. Jesus is called the Last Adam because He came as the representative human. Adam carried humanity into death. Christ carried humanity through death into resurrection life.

Raised Together With Him

Then Paul says συνηγέρθητε — synēgerthēte: “You were raised together with Him.” Again, there is that word: syn. Together with. Paul keeps repeating this because resurrection was never meant to be seen as Jesus doing something separated from humanity. The humanity Jesus took on was raised in Him. Paul is showing us that resurrection is not mainly about people trying hard enough to finally get God to move. Resurrection happened in Christ. God acted first.

Faith Is Not the Engine

Then Paul says this happened “through faith in the working of God.” The Greek word for “working” is ἐνέργεια — energeia. This means active power, divine energy, powerful working, effective operation. This is important. Faith is involved, yes. But faith is not the engine. God is the engine. God’s power is the source. The same God who raised Jesus from the dead is now actively working in people, waking them up to what is already true in Christ. Faith is not man trying to climb up to God. Faith is the Spirit opening our eyes to what God already did in Jesus.

Ephesians Says the Same Thing

Paul says the same thing again in Ephesians 2:5–6. He says God συνεζωοποίησεν — made us alive together with Christ, συνήγειρεν — raised us together with Him, συνεκάθισεν — seated us together with Him. Again and again Paul uses these “together with” words. Together alive. Together raised. Together seated. And look when God did this: “even when we were dead in sins.” That means God did not wait for humanity to fix itself first. God moved first — before religion, before performance, before striving, before human effort. God came toward humanity in Jesus Christ.

Christ Is the Last Adam

Paul’s whole message only works if Jesus truly became one with humanity. Jesus is not just a good example standing far away saying, “Try harder.” No. He entered fully into our humanity. What happened to Him happened to humanity in Him. When Adam fell, humanity fell in Adam. When Christ died, humanity died in Him. When Christ rose, humanity rose in Him. That is why Paul speaks first about what is objectively true in Christ before he talks about personal faith. The finished work comes first. Personal participation comes second.

So What Does Faith Do?

Faith does not create union with Christ. Faith awakens us to union with Christ. Faith is not twisting God’s arm. Faith is receiving what God already accomplished in Jesus. Even faith itself is being energized by God’s Spirit. That is why Paul connects faith to God’s energeia. God is already moving. The Holy Spirit is revealing Jesus. The Spirit is not trying to convince God to love humanity. The Spirit is revealing the love God already showed in Christ.

So Then What Is Baptism?

Baptism is not a magic ritual that suddenly makes resurrection happen. Christ already accomplished resurrection. Baptism is our witness to it. It is our participation in it. It is our public declaration saying, “I have been included in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.” Baptism proclaims what Jesus already accomplished.

Paul’s Gospel

The gospel is not, “Believe and get baptized so God can raise you.” The gospel is, “God raised humanity in Jesus Christ, and now the Holy Spirit is waking people up to believe, be baptized, and participate in the life already true in Him.” Or even simpler: Faith does not create union. Baptism does not make resurrection happen. Christ accomplished it. The Spirit reveals it. Faith receives it. Baptism proclaims it. That is the beauty of Paul’s gospel. God was not waiting far away for humanity to climb up to Him. In Jesus Christ, God came down into humanity, entered death, destroyed its power, and carried humanity into resurrection life. And now the Holy Spirit keeps opening eyes to see the life that has already appeared in Christ.
