Faith Has a Face โ€” And His Name Is Jesus

By Prophet of Grace PAULYB

I believe one of the biggest misunderstandings in the Body of Christ is how people define faith under the new covenant. Many believers still approach faith from an old covenant mindset. They read Hebrews 11 and see all the heroes of faith: “By faith Abel…” “By faith Noah…” “By faith Abraham…” And without realizing it, they begin turning faith into human effort. They think the Christian life is about becoming spiritually strong enough, emotionally confident enough, or mentally certain enough to receive from God.

But if you read Hebrews carefully, you will notice the entire book is built around one central word: better. Jesus is better than the angels. Jesus is better than Moses. Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant established on better promises. The writer of Hebrews is constantly moving your attention away from shadows and toward fulfillment. He is showing you that everything under the old covenant was pointing toward a greater reality found in Christ Himself.

Then something powerful happens. After listing all the old covenant examples of faith in Hebrews 11, the writer suddenly shifts the focus completely in Hebrews 12: “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” — Hebrews 12:2. That changes the entire conversation. The goal was never simply to admire Abraham’s faith. The goal was never merely to study Moses’ endurance. The goal was never to obsess over human believing. The goal was always Jesus.

Under the old covenant, people saw through types, shadows, prophecies, sacrifices, and promises from afar. But under the new covenant, faith now has a face. Faith is no longer straining to see something in the distance. Faith now beholds the unveiled revelation of God in Christ. This is why I tell people all the time: faith does not come from looking at yourself. Faith does not grow because you constantly examine whether you “feel spiritual enough.” Faith does not come because you became louder in prayer, or because you worked yourself into emotional intensity, or because you convinced yourself harder. Faith comes from seeing Jesus clearly.

Many believers are accidentally turning faith inward. They are examining themselves every day asking: “Do I have enough faith?” “Why don’t I feel more anointed?” “What if I’m doubting?” “What if my confession isn’t strong enough?” But faith was never designed to stare at itself. Faith is like an eye. An eye only functions correctly when it looks outward. The moment an eye turns inward on itself, it stops functioning the way it was created to function. In the same way, faith was created to look at Christ. That is why Hebrews does not say, “Fix your eyes on your level of faith.” It says, “Fix your eyes on Jesus.”

If you need healing in your body today, your focus cannot become the sickness. Your focus cannot even become the manifestation of healing itself. Your focus must become Jesus. Because many people are waiting to “feel healed” before they rest, but new covenant faith does not rest in feelings. It rests in a Person. The moment your attention becomes consumed with symptoms, fear begins growing. Anxiety begins growing. Self-effort begins growing. You start measuring God’s presence by what you feel from moment to moment. But Jesus never told us to build our confidence on our emotional state. He revealed the Father. Every miracle Jesus performed was revealing what God is like. Jesus did not heal people to create spiritual performers. He healed people to reveal the goodness of the Father. That is why true faith is not confidence in your ability to believe correctly. True faith is confidence in Him.

Paul said, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” — Romans 10:17. Notice Paul did not say faith comes from striving harder. Faith comes from hearing Christ, seeing Christ, beholding Christ. The more clearly you see Jesus, the more naturally trust begins to awaken inside of you. Why? Because faith is relational before it is functional.

Under old covenant thinking, many people treat faith like pressure. If something does not happen immediately, they assume they failed spiritually. They think, “I must not have enough faith.” So they become louder, more intense, more fearful, more self-conscious. But Jesus never pointed people toward faith in faith. He always pointed people toward the Father’s heart. This is why Hebrews says Jesus is both the author and perfecter of faith. He authors it, He sustains it, He completes it. Even faith itself is a gift flowing from union with Christ.

So maybe today the Holy Spirit is inviting you to stop obsessing over yourself. Stop monitoring your emotions every five minutes. Stop checking whether you feel powerful enough. Stop staring at symptoms trying to determine whether God is moving. Instead, lift your eyes again. Look at Jesus. Because whatever fills your vision will shape your expectation. If fear fills your vision, fear will multiply. If lack fills your vision, anxiety will increase. If self-effort fills your vision, exhaustion will follow. But when Jesus fills your vision, faith begins to rise naturally — not because you manufactured it, not because you performed correctly, but because faith was always meant to respond to the beauty of Christ.

The new covenant is not built on the strength of your grip on God. It is built on the revelation of His grip on you. And the more you see Him clearly, the more impossible things suddenly begin to look possible.
